  • FAT BURNING WORKOUT OF THE WEEK – THE "HILL FROM HELL"

    OK….I may have finally done it and bit off even more than I can chew this time!  In the search to help you guys with the best ways to burn fat, I headed out to the hill near my house (the one I affectionately call the “HILL FROM HELL”) and proceeded to put together a circuit that is bound to get your heart racing, your legs throbbing and your will tested!

    You might want to have a cardiologist available for this one!

    As you know…I’m a big believer in the effectiveness of what I call “AthLEAN Burst” Training when it comes to burning fat fast and still maintaining hard earned muscle.  In order to get an immediate spark of your metabolism you’ve got to give it a reason to move into overdrive.  This “Hill from Hell” workout qualifies as a pretty damn good reason!

    With a combination of lower body strength, power, endurance (heck…even balance…as I’m certainly no Billy Goat and I do find it rather difficult to get up the hill going backwards!) and heart, this fat burning workout of the week may be my most challenging yet.  I want you to try it for yourself and see how you do.  I definitely encourage your comments and feedback after you’ve hit the hill near you!

  • ASK BEN MAY YOUR ATHLEAN-X QUESTIONS!

    Ben May Transformation Some of you might know the story of Ben May by now.  You might remember the young man from England from a few months ago, when I showcased his transformation in an email I sent out.  Well…things just got better for Ben as he has officially been named the first annual “Mr. X” of the Year!

    Not only was Ben’s transformation incredible as witnessed by these numbers:

    Initial Weight = 196 lbs

    Weight after 90 days = 160 lbs

    Initial Waist = 36 inches

    Weight after 90 days = 30 inches

    Initial Body Fat = 22%

    Body Fat after 90 days = 7%

    But in his own words, I think he sums up what this program has meant to him:

    “Its now 3 months after i completed the Athlean-X regime. And i can tell you that the results are permanent. I still work out 4 or 5 times a week and eat 6 times a day but i have become slightly more relaxed about my diet. I still stick clear of all simple sugars but foods such as white bread and cereals with slightly higher sugar levels i don’t mind eating. Essentially i am not quite so selective and i allow some foods that i may not have allowed initially. The great news though, is that it doesn’t make a bit of difference now! My metabolism has changed. I gave it 3 months to  transform and it did exactly that. I am now 157lbs and with a body fat of 6% and I have never been more pleased. If you want results fast and ones that will last i guarantee you if you put 100% into this programme it will work!

    Notice the determination.  Ben wanted this badly.  He set a goal of being sick and tired of carrying around the excess body fat and he wanted to quit being self conscious about how he looked with his shirt off.  He felt he was way too young to supposed to be worrying about that….and I couldn’t agree more!  He put the 100% in that he mentioned, didn’t let anything get in the way, and the results above speak for themselves.

    But that’s not even the best part!  No…the best part is that NOW…YOU’RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO STEAL BEN’S SECRETS!!

    Yes…you can copy the little tricks and tips that Ben used to Conquer the “X” on his way to shedding 15% bodyfat from his frame and adding pounds of lean muscle! Here’s how.  With Ben May set to arrive in CT this weekend to meet me personally and spend two days training together (just one of the many perks of being named the Mr. X of the Year!), I decided that I am going to open up the floor to YOUR questions.  Yes, I know that some of you think that I look the way I do because I do this for a living and I HAVE to look good.  And…you’d be 100% right.  But on the other hand, Ben is not.  He is a student, has a busy study schedule…has gym equipment limitations.  He’s what you would call the normal, average guy.  Well, if you can relate to that (and the struggles that go along with being that guy), then you’ve got to take the 40 seconds it will take for you to write Ben a quick question about anything…to try and pick his brain about how he achieved his suXXess on the program!

  • FITNESS MYTH BUSTER – WILL EATING AFTER 6PM WILL PREVENT FAT LOSS?

    Back for another installment of “Fitness Myth Busters” to demystify perhaps the longest running misinformation in the world of health and fitness.  The real problem with these urban myths is that they tend to be so deeply rooted that changing the mindset of those who have followed this bad advice for years and years, is no easy task to overcome.  But that’s ok.  AthLEAN-X is ready…even if we have to stay here until 6PM tomorrow to get you to understand!

    So, for those of you reading who aren’t already completely sure about this one…what I’m talking about is the idea that eating anything after 6PM is in some way a bad thing.  Heck…those proponents of this idea will make you feel as if you might as well of just eaten a plate full of French Fries and washed it down with a triple cheesburger if you dare put some food in you after the clock strikes six!

    Well, for you late night noshers….I’m here to tell you don’t worry about it and in fact, if your goal is to build muscle, you better eat something after 6 PM!

    The rationale doesn’t even make sense.  All day long, it’s preached to you to get some food into your system every 2 and a half to 3 hours.  But much like Cinderella, except only 6 hours too early, you are advised to stop that practice at the stroke of 6PM, almost as if you would turn into a pumpkin if you didn’t obey.  Why?!?  Your body, as always, craves routine and pattern.  Developing a healthy pattern of nutrient availability by having something to eat every few hours is good.  Then stopping this pattern and putting the whole concept on hold for 12 hours is not good!  Really not good!

    As a matter of fact, some bodybuilders have gone to the other extreme to reinforce this point.  They’ll keep up that metabolic pattern they’ve established by setting their alarm twice throughout the night so they can get up and go have a snack every 3 hours throughout their sleep.  And remember…these are guys that are trying to get absolutely shredded!  You still think that eating after 6PM is a fat burning sin?

    So, have your dinner and then have something again later on, before bed.  I always recommend that in order to assist in protein synthesis and muscle regeneration over night, you add a bit more on the protein side.  Perfect examples of this are protein shakes, cottage cheese, yogurt and some berries, or a small bowl of high protein cereal with some skim milk.  All of these will do the job equally well, but the point is mainly…you’ve got to eat something if you hope to continue to build muscle and burn fat while you sleep.

    Listening instead to the urban myth and not eating after 6PM will be your quickest path to less muscle and a heavier version of the you you’re trying to become! Assuming you eat again in the morning (at 6 AM even), then you will have gone a full half of day without putting a log on your metabolic fire.  If you can convince me that that’s healthy and THE way to actually boost metabolism then I’ll buy whatever bridge you’ve got for sale as well!

    So as you can see, I truly believe that it’s not only high time to stop fearing the past 6PM pudge and instead get in your head that if you DON’T eat after this time, then you’re putting yourself on the fast track to creating the kind of body that those who pass on this fitness myth are trying to protect you against.  Instead, keep that metabolism churning along with frequent deliveries of high quality nutrients to your working and recovering muscles.  Not only will you see yourself lean out considerably, but building new muscle may even become easier than you’ve ever felt it was before as a nice added bonus.

  • FITNESS MYTH BUSTER – LOSE WEIGHT BY EATING LESS?

    The fitness world is rife with tips, tricks, techniques and advice.  The problem with…I would say that a good 80% of these tidbits are either worthless, not practical or downright wrong and potentially harmful.  In an effort to help you cut through the B.S. to get to the actual information you can sink your teeth into, apply and put to good use, I figured it would be best for me to set up my own little Fitness Myth Buster series….with the first target being the idea that in order to lose weight you must eat less.

    It seems pretty logical right?  Keep both the amount of food you eat per meal and the number of meals down to a minimum during the day and you’ll starve yourself to at least a few pounds weight loss.  The worst part about it is…it is true.  You will actually lose a couple pounds doing this.

    The tricky part comes in when you try to sustain this weight loss!  It’s the people who eat like this that led to the creation of the term “yo-yo” dieting.  I like to call it “boomerang dieting“.  Throw some weight off and before you know it, it will come right back on.  A vicious cycle indeed, and one that needs to be snapped if long term weight loss and fat loss are your goals.

    So what to do?  Simple.  Eat more often and eat until you are full!  Wait a second!  I can hear you right now…”that can’t work!  How can I eat as much as I want and INCREASE the number of times I’m eating and lose weight?!” The answer is simple.  It happens because you’re finally letting the body function the way it was meant to…as a high performance engine in need of fuel to keep it running at peak potential.  The trick is that I know you’ll actually be limiting your own portion sizes by filling your body with a steady flow of usable nutrients.  You’ll never be susceptible to the blood sugar roller coaster that wreaks all kinds of havoc on your brain and the signals it sends to your stomach.  Instead, you’ll be burning at a nice steady rate the whole day with constant energy and well fed muscles from dusk to dawn.

    The whole idea of eating three times a day is over, kaput, finished, done!  Did I mention you need to eat more than three times a day?!?! Anyway, get that thought out of your head right now.  If you’re still stuck on the idea, then just do me one favor and ask yourself one thing.  How is the three time a day eating working for you?  Why are you in search of a diet program or a way to lose weight on the internet if your three times a day eating has you looking perfect?  The truth is, it’s not working.  So you need to trust me and try something different.

    From now on….dispel that old myth about eating less and start eating more (more food and more often!).  I know, it’s going to be more of a mental hurdle for some of you then a physical one, but that’s ok.   I know you’re tough and can handle it.  After all, it’s not like I’m telling you you shouldn’t eat for a month!  I’m actually allowing you to eat more often. That should seem too good to be true.  Well, it is true….but it is good too!  So dig in and see what a difference this can have on your long term ability to lose weight and most importantly keep it off.

  • HOW 4 MINUTES OF HELL CAN EQUAL A LIFETIME OF RIPPED ABS!

    Most guys want a set of six pack abs!  It’s not secret. They want ripped abs that they can show off at the beach, be proud of when they’re with a girl for the first time, and even be the envy of their buddies in good old locker room banter.  But getting them is the little snag that keeps tripping them up!

    As a trainer who has worked with some of the greatest star athletes and celebrities in the world I know that most guys are alike.  They are results driven and want to be able to get to their end goal with as little wasted time as possible.

    Well, when it comes to abs there are no shortcuts.  Or are there?

    What if I told you that with one little 4 minute routine you could steadily chip away at the body fat that is covering your six pack right now, until just weeks from now, you’d be seeing an entirely new you staring back at you in the mirror…a beach ready, ab certified version of you?!?  Would you be willing to invest THAT kind of time??

    Well, since you’re reading an article about fitness…and as a loyal follower of AthLEAN-X, I know that the answer is most definitely a resounding YES!  Well, as with any good loaded question, you really might want to know what’s required before you just answer YES!  I never said this would be a cakewalk.  Remember, it’s called 4 Minutes of HELL for a reason.  This isn’t Oz!

    OK, so now that I’ve got your attention here’s how you’re going to turn up the heat on your metabolism to become a fat burning inferno.  The key is in the succession of movements and the fact that rest is a non-factor in this workout.  You will literally be working from start to finish, involving virtually every major muscle group from abs, triceps, biceps, back, chest, shoulders, calves, hamstrings and quads….to every little muscle in between!  Don’t believe me?  Give me 4 minutes and I’ll give you the workout of a lifetime.  Oh and did I mention that you can do all of this in just a very small area of space?

    That said, here’s the rundown.  You’ll do 30 seconds consecutively of each of these exercises.  If you’re really man enough, you might even then consider giving hell another run for it’s money with a second round!  But only if you dare.

    Alternating Kettlebell Swings – 30 seconds

    Kettlebell Skier Hops – 30 seconds

    Kettlebell Sunrise Sunset – 30 seconds

    Plyo “X” Pushups – 30 seconds

    Twisting Pistons – 30 seconds

    Mountain Climbers – 30 seconds

    Burpee Med Ball Press – 30 seconds

    Jump Rope – 30  seconds

  • BURN FAT FAST WITH THESE 4 WARP SPEED FAT LOSS EXERCISES

    The secret to fat loss isn’t so much in how to get it done.  I think we all know that.  After all, there are plenty of  diets that explain how to deprive yourself into a leaner body.  There are countless gurus who proclaim that their system is the ONLY way to lose the stubborn fat that you’ve had hanging around your waist for far too long.  And there are way too many pills that may in fact help you burn some of that blubber….if they don’t kill you in the process!  That’s not what is needed.  Instead, the ultimate secret to fat loss success is when you can find a way to help you burn fat FAST!

    Isn’t that always the key?  Who wants to lose unwanted fat, but have to wait two to three years to do it?!?  Probably nobody.  On the other hand, if I told you there are 4 sure-fire ways to incinerate the body fat without having to wait years, months or even weeks to see the difference…would you be interested?

    Of course, or you wouldn’t be reading this article.  So that said, let me show you my 4 quickest and surest solutions to maximizing fat loss through exercise.

    #1 – Jump Rope

    This is quite possibly the best way ever invented for burning fat.  The only problem is that some people lack the coordination to do it effectively.  Don’t worry.  You don’t have to be Floyd Mayweather to be able to get the fat loss benefits from this exercise.  All you have to be able to do is jump the rope with two feet more than say 20 times at a time.  If you hit the rope.  No sweat.  Just start again.  It’s actually kind of fun and self competitive which gives you something to shoot for each time.  Try to increase your maximum jumps or try to increase your total number of consecutive jumps at each workout and not only will you be setting new personal records each workout, but you’ll be dropping some serious fat lbs along the way.

    #2  Hill Running

    There is nothing quite like hill running to go beyond normal fat burning and put your results on overdrive!  Not only that, but the benefits you’ll get in your quads and hamstrings as well will be enough to make you consider your leg workouts easy!  Yep…it’s that challenging, but at the same time it’s actually inspiring and fun.  Need an even bigger challenge?  Slap on a weighted vest and do these babies and you will practically feel the fat melting off as  you leave it behind you on the hill!

    #3  Shadow Boxing

    The perfect one-two combination for burning fat is the jump rope and hill running combo, but if you want a literal one-two combo to knock out the fat, then you’ve got to try shadow boxing!  Nothing fancy and no special equipment required.  Just get in front of a mirror, put on your favorite Rocky music and start throwing some haymakers for three minutes straight.  Rest 1 minute and go again.  Try and work your way up to 10 rounds and before you know it, you’ll look like Stallone in Rocky IV….minus the growth hormone of course!

    #4  Tennis

    Finally, trade in the gloves for a racket and join a friend out on the court for a tennis match.  There’s something about the inherent interval burst conditioning of playing this game that makes it a perfect solution to the belly bulge.  Quick starts, stops, and burst sprints just to get back and forth to the ball….are the perfect recipe for leaning up as you show you your buddy of course!
